Strange dog habits

You may be worrying about your dog’s strange habits, but in fact they are nothing to worry about and not strange at all to dogs. Some habits of dogs are very common and most dogs, in fact all dogs,  have these habits. So the next time you see your dog doing such things do not think your dog is abnormal, they are common habits which dogs have.

These strange habits include dogs kicking their hind legs after going to the bathroom or dogs sniffing the grass and then rubbing it and many more.

Each strange habit the dogs performs is due to a reason.

Why does a dog kick their hind legs after going to bathroom?

This is a very normal behavior for majority of dogs, some females and some males do it. In the wild this is done to spread the scent and inform other animals around that they are present in that particular area and that it is their space.

Males are more likely to do this as compared to female dogs.  Animals that are intact mark more than those that have been altered. Dogs do have sweat glands in their feet so they tend to spread their scent so other animals know that they were present over there. This is the way dogs sweat, but the urine in itself is the marker.  This is the reason that male dogs are said to be marking their territory.

The action of kicking is similar to a cat scraping the litter box to cover their scent. Dogs urinate over other dog’s urine in an effort to mask that dog’s urine. It is often seen that this done by the male dogs over the urine of the female dogs by hiding her scent.

Why does a dog sniff grass and then rub in it?

Well this strange dog habit is also very normal.  There can be two reasons the dog is doing this.  First is that the dog wants to let other dogs know about their presence by spreading their scent.  The dog is essentially marking their territory. Second reason could be that the dog might smell a scent of another dog and either the dog likes the scent or is trying to get rid of the scent.  By rubbing the dog is trying to cover up where another dog urinated.
