14 Common Commands to Control Your Dog

I have two puppies just over a year old. I am constantly looking for a simple guide of common commands so I can be consistent in training them. My friend who is a dog trainer gave me a list of commands to help me train my dogs. So far, it has helped. Give the commands a try and let us know how it works for you. But remember you really need to be consistent!

1. Down – The dog position will be on the left side of the handler facing in the similar direction. The dog should lie down on the floor with elbows touching the ground.

2. Sit – Keep the dog’s rump on the floor.

3. Stand – The position of the dog is on the left hand side of the handler facing in the similar position. The dog should stand up on all four feet and stay in the same position.

4. Come – When the name of the dog is called or the word “come” is used he should instantly come to you.

5. Stay – When word “stay” comes from the mouth the dog should remain in exact place.

6. Formal Come -The dog comes back to the left side of the handler and turns towards the handler and ends up facing forward in a position of “sit” at the handler’s left side. This means the dog should not be engaged anywhere else once he is back to the handler.

7. Leave it - It just used for stopping the behavior of the dog that is not wanted from him such as jumping up, excessive smelling, etc.

8. Get Busy - The dog is supposed to defecate and urinate on lead. The dog should relieve himself on various surfaces.

9. O.K. – Releasing the dog from the previous command given to him by the handler.

10. Wait – It is more likely an obedience command for keeping the dog in check, to know that he needs to wait for the next command.

11. No - This is given to discourage and to stop the unwanted behaviors.

12. Off - This is to teach the dog to get off the bed or sofa or to not jump on other people.

13. Drop it - It is required to drop whatever is in the mouth of your dog.

14. Heel - To make your dog walk on the left side of the handler without running ahead or lagging behind.
