Common Questions About Exercising Your Dog

Regular exercise is essential and vital part of your domestic pet’s life.  By walking around and moving they can hunt for their food and maintain their optimal health.  It also keeps them from getting into mischief around your home due to all of that pent up energy.

Why is it important to exercise a dog?

Constant and energetic use of the muscles stimulates all the tissues in the body and increases the circulation of the blood as well.  As energetic movements start the blood vessels also start dilating and blood pressure begins to rise, which results in oxygenation of tissues and helps in cleaning the cells of toxins.  Regular exercise not only improves the bowel movement but also helps the digestive glands in secreting their fluids effectively.

What type of exercise is good for a dog?

A regular exercise can include half an hour or more of playing ball, walking or chasing sticks or playing Frisbee.  In case your dog is not strong enough to play then take him for a slow walk around the house.  If your dog has some problems in his leg like paralysis or sore foot or in case the dog has back problems, you can exercise and cheer him up by swimming in large tub, swimming pool or bathtub.

This kind of exercise will help the dog to strengthen his body and if he is not able to swim, sling the dog with a towel or cloth for his body support.  A regular exercise not only makes the dog fit but also increases his alertness for other things.

Where and how to exercise a dog?

Dog parks and dog games can also be used to make your dog exercise physically as well as mentally.  For high energy dogs, biking and roller blading can also be used, but before doing that, make sure the dog is on a good and tight leash.  You can also use treadmills for high energy dogs but first make them comfortable on the equipment.

Important tips to remember when exercising a dog.

  • The first thing you have to keep in mind is what kind of dog you have and what is the right type of exercise suitable for him.  For a small dog, a walk of thirty minutes is sufficient.  For a large dog, exercise is most important as they get restless.
  • The second most important thing is that your dog is well hydrated.  Keep cool, fresh water always available for your dog after the exercise or whenever he needs it.
