Heartworms mostly live and multiply in the heart and lunges of the infected animal. They intoxicate pet’s body and eventually can clog the heart artery. The treatment of this infestation is done by injecting certain drugs, such as Immiticide or Melarsomine. The side effects of heartworm treatment in dogs are not solely caused by the drugs.

They may be caused by the dead worms in the body. Alive worms release toxins of their faeces into the blood, which intoxicates pet body. However, when many worms get killed with the drug, they suddenly release much toxin into the blood. This may cause severe intoxication and side effects of heartworm treatment in dogs.

Here is a list of possible side effects of heartworm treatment in dogs. Some of them are caused by the drug injection, such as swelling, pain, and sensibility at the injection site or reluctance to move caused by the pain at injection site.

Other problems can be caused both by the drug and by the dead worms. Those are coughing, lethargy, fever, excessive drooling, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, blood coughing, strong or weak heart beats and even death of the animal.

To avoid developing some of these issues, the treated animal has to get proper after treatment care. Its movements and exercising has to be limited. Pet should not be allowed to run or move fast and much for several weeks after the treatment. Much movement can cause heart clogging with dead heartworms.
