How to Train Dogs to Stop Barking

How to train dogs to stop barking

There are various reasons why dogs bark. Different dogs have different barks.  It all depends on what they are barking at and why they are barking.

In case your dog has a problem with barking at other dogs, you can apply the following steps to stop your dog from barking at other dogs:

  • One should accept the fact no one can stop a dog from completely barking.  At times barking is good for us as a signal or a warning to indicate that some unwanted guests are around. So just check out and find how much barking is fine and what kind of barking you are going to permit.
  • Next is to recognize the kind of barking your dog usually does when there is another dog around. The basis of the bark can be excitement, self-identification, fear or warning/alert. If you come to know about the cause of the barking, you will probably find better ways to treat the symptoms.
  • As much as possible, try to make your dog come in acquaintance with a variety of dogs.  This will make the dog less likely to bark at other dogs or at least not bark as frequently at those dogs. This is particularly necessary for dogs that your dog will see more often, for example neighborhood dogs, family member’s dog or your friend’s dog.
  • You can also try to stop the bark by firmly saying “no” or any other words you choose, as soon as the dog begins to bark. Try to be consistent without shouting and say it repeatedly until the dog stops barking. Be firm and warn the dog each time you find the dog barking at other dogs and reward the dog if the dog stops or does not do at all by saying “good dog”.
  • Try keeping the dog in places where dogs are around and make it a practice. This will make the dog get used to other dogs and by doing this you can also make the dog stop barking on the command as well. Be relaxed when some other dogs come closer to you so that you do not make the dogs unintentionally tense.
  • Require your dog to sit  in a submissive and calm posture. The best of doing this is by putting on a short leash and the correction collar.
